On May 10, 2018, Sergeant Michael Barber, a 26-year-old veteran of the Mobile Police Department, retired while under administrative investigation. While the department had no ability to prevent Sergeant Barber from retiring, the investigation continued.
Upon completion of the investigation, the department turned the evidence over to the District Attorney’s Office, which resulted in the current charges that have been brought against him. Those charges include one count of theft of property first degree and 45 counts of forgery second degree.
“We regret that Sergeant Barber’s own actions resulted in criminal charges being brought against him, and it saddens us that his actions have caused a betrayal of trust to the badge and to the public,” said Chief of Police Lawrence Battiste. “But this shows our resolve to hold everyone accountable for their actions as long as they wear the badge and uniform of a Mobile Police Department officer.”
