On Sunday, October 20, 2024, at approximately 7:47 p.m., officers responded to the 1400 block of Avonlea Court in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim deceased and a female victim with serious injuries following a shooting that occurred a short time earlier. Upon further investigation, officers discovered the victims’ daughter, Charity Matthews, 36, shot both parents before quickly leaving the scene with her two young children.
In the early morning hours of Monday, October 21, 2024, officers located Matthews at a local hotel. A joint effort amongst our Homicide Unit, Cyber Intelligence Unit, Tactical Intelligence Unit, SWAT, Drone Team, K-9, Patrol Unit and our Identification Unit made it possible to apprehend Matthews without incident. Both children were found safe.
The subject is also tied to another shooting that occurred on Saturday, October 19, 2024, in the 2100 block of Height Street. The male victim in this case was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. This remains an active investigation and no further information is available at this time.
