In recent months, Mobile police have responded to a substantial number of calls for service involving persons with a weapon and discharging firearms. That is 200 more calls compared to last year citywide from January to April.
As a direct correlation, violent crime incidents, namely assaults and robberies, typically increase with gun-related offenses. Through the operation City H.E.A.T., heightened enforcement and apprehension tactics are being used to control the uptick in violent crime, including illegal drug activity.
The vast majority of the city’s violent crime incidents occur in specific areas throughout the police jurisdiction. They are the R.V. Taylor corridor (South Ann Street at Duval), 5 Point corridor (North Ann Street at St. Stephens), Village Green community (Azalea/Pleasant Valley Road), and Providence Hospital area (Cody/Dickens Ferry Road).
On Wednesday afternoon, May 24, 2017, search warrants were executed at six locations identified as area nuisances for illegal drug activity.
A roundup of 13 individuals with arrest warrants was simultaneously conducted. There was a total of 39 felonies and four misdemeanors charges.
During Wednesday’s operation, police recovered approximately one gram of crack cocaine, two grams of marijuana, two pistols and one rifle.
The second phase of the operation is safety check points and high-intensity directed patrols in identified crime areas. This phase focuses on promoting public safety and reducing criminal activity such as loitering and narcotic sales on the street.
