October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the City of Mobile is helping to raise awareness about domestic violence and its impact on local families. Later this month, the Mobile Police Department, City of Mobile Parks and Recreation Department and advocacy groups like Mothers Involved Against Gun Violence will be hosting a “Power of Purple” Resource Fair.
The event will include mini-educational sessions, engaging activities related to self-care, informational booths, and a tribute to survivors of domestic violence. The “Power of Purple” Resource Fair will be held on Saturday, October 21, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Seals Community Center (540 Texas Street).
“The recent domestic-related shootings in our city means that we must do more to save families,” said Nija Hill, founder of Mothers Involved Against Gun Violence. “Children who witness domestic violence may be at greater risk of being violent toward others, especially if they see it too often. Together, I believe with education, we can end the cycle of domestic violence.”
The mini-educational sessions during the resource fair on October 21 will include:
“Know the Warning Signs” led by Lifelines Counseling Services
“The Laws that Protect You” led by MPD’s Domestic Violence Detail
“Tips for Thriving after Being a Domestic Violence Victim” led by Penelope House.
There will also be engaging activities related to self-care hosted by the MPD Victim Services Unit and Family Intervention Team. The Mobile County Health Department’s Community Prevention Services Team, City of Mobile’s Community Affairs Department and Wings of Life are a few of the agencies that will have informational booths set up at the event.
The resource fair is free. Everyone is welcome to attend. Attendees are asked to wear purple.
