G.R.E.A.T. Program Kickoff at Spencer-Westlawn Elementary School
Oct 15th, 2015
The "Choose to be G.R.E.A.T. Week" begins with a ceremony at Spencer-Westlawn Elementary School. G.R.E.A.T. is a Gang Resistance Education and Training program taught by the Mobile Police program facilitators. A proclamation from the Office of the Governor recognizing the G.R.E.A.T. program in the state of Alabama will be presented during the program kickoff at the school on Oct. 19 at 9 a.m.
With the G.R.E.A.T. curriculum, elementary students learn to make great choices by understanding how their decisions affect outcomes. They learn how to communicate clearly with body language and tone of voice. Additionally, students learn how to control anger, respect others, and be a great citizen by avoiding gangs and not participating in violence.
The Mobile Police Department implemented the G.R.E.A.T. program in elementary schools three years ago. It is an evidence-based prevention program designed to be an immunization against delinquency, youth violence, and gang membership.
Along with Spencer-Westlawn Elementary School, nine other schools will participate in the G.R.E.A.T. program during the week. Spencer-Westlawn Elementary is located at 3071 Ralston Road.
