James H. Barber Sworn in as Chief of Police

Former Deputy Chief James H. Barber was sworn in as Chief of Police today at the Mobile City Council meeting after a unanimous vote of approval from the Council.

Barber began his professional career as a United States Marine and joined the Mobile Police Department in 1988. He has held the position of Deputy Chief since 2006. In his 25 year career, Chief Barber has served in many capacities, earning distinctions and awards along the way. As Police Chief, Barber will lead Mayor Stimpson's mission to make the city of Mobile the safest city in the country by 2020.

"Chief Barber has served the Mobile Police Department with distinction for 25 years. It is now his time to lead the Department and help make Mobile the safest city in America," said Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson.

A native of Mobile, Alabama, Barber received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice and Business from the University of South Alabama and his Masters degree in Public Administration from Troy University. He is also a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy. He serves as an adjunct faculty member at the University of South Alabama. Chief Barber is the proud father of two daughters and an avid fisherman.

"I can think of no greater honor than to be entrusted with the fundamental duty to ensure the safety of the public. It is with great enthusiasm and confidence that I accept this responsibility. Failure is not an option to me," Barber said.
