Mobile Police, Area Agencies Arrest Pharmacist, Close Pharmacy

On August 26, 2014, Mobile Police Narcotics Unit and Mobile County Street Enforcement Narcotics Team (MSCENT), along with Prichard Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Alabama Board of Pharmacies executed a search warrant at Caffey's Pharmacy at 3707 B St. Stephens Road in reference to the owner, Donald Scarcliff, illegally selling codeine from the location.

A three-week investigation revealed Scarcliff sold the codeine to area individuals for illegal, street-level distribution. He was arrested and charged with three counts of Distribution of a Controlled Substance. In addition, the Alabama Board of Pharmacies revoked his pharmaceutical license and a temporary restraining order was filed against Scarcliff by Mobile Police, which closed the business.

"Inter-agency cooperation played a major role in this operation," said Mobile Police Chief James Barber. "A local pharmacist — a trusted medical professional — deceived our community by putting controlled narcotics on the streets. We are sending a message that there is no safe haven for criminals, regardless of jurisdiction."
