Mobile Police Conclude Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation

On Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at approximately 1:35 p.m., Mobile Police officers were in the area of Live Oak Street and Persimmon Streets for a report of drug activity. Officers attempted to detain two subjects who matched witness descriptions as those possibly involved in the activity when a struggle ensued. Shawn E. Taylor, 23 years-old, produced a weapon during the struggle. Multiple shots were fired, including one that hit Taylor in the lower back. Taylor was transported to the hospital for a non life-threatening injury. The officer was not injured.
Upon release from the hospital, Taylor was arrested for No Pistol Permit, Attempting to Elude, Resisting Arrest, Menacing and Certain Person Forbidden.
Mobile Police Internal Affairs and Homicide unit have concluded the investigation into this officer-involved shooting. The results of the investigation find Officer Kevin Kelly was justified in his use of deadly force during the struggle with Taylor. The investigation concluded Taylor was attempting to gain access to his weapon to use against Officer Kelly. Officer Kelly is a six-year veteran of the Mobile Police Department.
