Mobile Police Department Mounted Unit Receives National Grant Funding

The Mobile Police Department is pleased to announce its Mounted Unit has received grant funding from the HOOFS Fund. This grant money will be used to purchase equipment for the horses in this unit which will enable officers to better serve the citizens of the city of Mobile.
The Mounted Unit, a part of the Department's Field Operations Bureau, is a specially trained team of officers providing patrol on horseback. This detail works the public parks within the central business district, the convention center area, the Mobile Civic Center and other areas, as assigned. It is also charged with:
• Controlling vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
• Enforcing parking, pedestrian and other related ordinances expediting the movement of traffic.
• Crowd control at major events, such as Mardi Gras and BayFest.
The HOOFS Fund is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization established in 2007 to raise private dollars to enhance the living and working conditions of police horses in Washington, D.C. and beyond. The HOOFS Fund mission is to:
• Provide support for police horses in the form of funds, materials, labor and public awareness;
• Foster community cooperation and public/private partnerships to support the safety, well-being, health and training of police horses;
• Support the dissemination of research and the sharing of best practices in such areas as veterinarian care, stable management, and training as pertains to police horses;
• Provide support, capacity-building and training opportunities for volunteers who devote their time, expertise and resources to the care and well-being of police horses.
