MOBILE POLICE FATALLY WOUND BANK ROBBERY SUSPECT (UPDATE)

On July 23, 2009 at approximately 3:04 PM, Mobile Police responded to a report of a bank robbery at the RBC bank located at 4357 Old Shell Road. During the robbery, the suspect entered the bank armed with a handgun, a mask covering his face, and demanded money from teller. The suspect retrieved an undisclosed amount of US currency and fled the scene occupying a green 1994 Acura Legend.

Officers received a description of the suspect and responded to the scene and surrounding areas. Officers observed the suspect driving the Acura Legend in the area of Old Shell Road and Hillcrest Road. Officers initiated lights and sirens in an effort to stop the suspect in reference to the bank robbery investigation. The suspect failed to stop and led officers in a vehicle pursuit on Old Shell Road toward Hillcrest Road. The pursuit continued south on Hillcrest Road toward Girby Road where officers observed the suspect throw money from the vehicle. Officers also observed the suspect brandish a handgun during the pursuit.

The pursuit continued onto Three Notch Road and Highway 90 where the suspect crashed his vehicle into a gold Cadillac occupied by a civilian in the parking lot of First Baptist Church located at 5660 Three Notch Road. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the suspect then pointed his weapon at pursuing officers. The officers subsequently discharged multiple rounds at the suspect, fatally wounding him.

Investigators with the Mobile Police Department's Robbery, Homicide, and Internal Affairs Units responded to the scene to conduct their respective investigations. This investigation will remain continuous and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
