Mobile Police Sergeant Terminated on Major Violations

Sep 12th, 2014

Mobile Police Chief James Barber announces the termination, effective immediately, of Sergeant Michael Smith, who was most currently assigned as a supervisor in Precinct Four.

On Wednesday, September 3, 2014, a Trial Board was convened for the purpose of hearing evidence of five major violations. The members of this Board made the unanimous decision to find Sergeant Smith guilty of Conduct Unbecoming, Misuse of Position, Failure to Obey a Direct Order, Biased Based Profiling and Disobedience of Orders. As all these charges are major violations, the Board recommended Smith be dismissed from service with the Mobile Police Department. Chief Barber and Mayor Sandy Stimpson concurred with the findings of the Board.

"Sergeant Michael Smith was charged with a leadership position in this Department, in which he betrayed the public's trust and confidence," said Chief Barber. "He has violated and tarnished the badge of his office."

Smith served the Mobile Police Department for over 15 years.
