Mobile Police Warn of Magazine Sales Scam

Dec 12th, 2012

On Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at approximately 3:00 p.m., in the 2100 block of Schillinger Road, the victim was approached at her apartment by two white male subjects who stated they were representing the Boy Scouts and were selling magazines for college scholarship money.

The victim was told she could write a check for magazine subscriptions and the subjects would get points towards a college scholarship. She was repeatedly told by the subjects that she could issue a stop payment on the checks, that the subjects simply needed to turn in checks at the end of the day to get scholarship points.

The victim wrote each of the subjects a check, totaling over $600, on which she intended to stop payment. However, the checks were cashed the same day they were written, before the victim could contact her bank. The subjects gave the victim a receipt from a business named Global Point Subscriptions with a post office box address in Grand Junction, Colorado. There is no business license issued for this company or the address listed.

The subjects are described as white males in their late teens to early 20s. One subject is short and stocky with light brown, spiked hair. The other subject is tall and thin, with shoulder-length blonde hair.

Detectives will continue to investigate this crime. If anyone has information, please call the Mobile Police Department at (251) 208-7211.
