The Mobile Police Department recently conducted work zone safety enforcement to ensure drivers are slowing down and paying attention to workers. According to Drive Safe Alabama, work zone fatalities and crashes are on the rise in Alabama. Last month, a road construction worker was struck and killed in Mobile.
From April 9, 2019 to April 12, 2019, traffic safety officers issued a total of 79 citations in the work zone areas on Dauphin Island Parkway between McVay Drive North and Hurtel Street, and on Florida Street between Dauphin Street and Old Shell Road.
There were 163 speeding tickets issued during the four-day enforcement. Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation. Fines for speeding double in work zones when construction workers are present.
To save lives, the Mobile Police Department urges drivers to slow down and stay alert in work zones. Road construction worker 40-year-old Clarence Crutcher lost his life in the work zone on Dauphin Island Parkway at Hurtle Street on Wednesday, March 13, 2019.
About 200 more citations were issued in the surrounding areas of the work zones for traffic violations such as running a red light, revoked, expired or no driver license, failure to provide proof of insurance, improper tag, failure to show vehicle registration, not wearing a seat belt, and failure to properly use child restraints.
