MPD Officers Deployed to North Alabama

May 25th, 2011

On the day the deadly tornados struck north Alabama, April 27, 2011, the Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director of Homeland Security for the state of Alabama, Spencer Collier, activated the Alabama Mutual Aid System (AMAS). AMAS, which involves the City of Mobile and nine other counties, includes 12 Mobile Police Department officers. On this day, all 12 officers, comprising two teams, were deployed to Rainsville, Alabama.

Once the AMAS team arrived in Rainsville, they set up a command post to serve as a base camp for officers. The objective of the team for this deployment was to enhance current patrols, including controlling looting activities; take calls for service and to deliver supplies to those Rainsville residents who needed them the most. The base camp is self-sustaining, loaded with equipment and materials that allow the team to be the most helpful in a severely affected area, such as Rainsville.

All 12 officers of the AMAS team were deployed twice — the first deployment was April 27 to May 2 and the second deployment was May 11 to May 17. During their first deployment, officers worked 12 hour shifts, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. while the second deployment split the team into two shifts, both day and night.

The officers of the AMAS team are specially trained to respond to these types of situations within the state of Alabama. The Mobile Police Department is proud of the officers that gave aid to fellow Alabamians in need after traumatic storm damage.
