Drug nuisance house on Juniper Street to be demolished
Feb 29th, 2016
The house at 1303 Juniper Street, condemned by the court as a drug nuisance house, will finally be demolished today, Feb. 29, at 10 a.m. It was a ‘Skin House' —the place where gambling, partying, the illegal sell of alcohol and drug use occurred. But through the use of information gathered from complaints and investigation, Mobile PD shut down the drug house.
Over a 10-month period in 2014 Mobile PD narcotics investigators and community service personnel executed three search warrants that led to more than 80 arrests for drug-related activity at the house. The property was found occupied by 39 subjects when the first search warrant was executed. All were arrested for charges that included loitering for purpose of drug activity, possession of controlled substance, and distribution of controlled substance.
During the execution of the second and third search warrants, dozens of people were arrested for simple gambling, promoting gambling, loitering for the purpose of drug activity, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of controlled substance and prostitution.
Items confiscated during the search warrants were 67 bottles of liquor, various types of drug paraphernalia, gambling equipment, seven syringes, a crack pipe, 28 decks of playing cards, a digital scale, a multitude of cellophane bags used to package narcotics, $857 in U.S. currency, two vehicles valued at $10,000, and scheduled and nonscheduled prescription medications. The medications confiscated were the same as what the arrested individuals sold to confidential informants.
It became evident that the drug house created a public nuisance to the Bottoms area, thus bringing crime, fear, noise, and health risks to the neighborhood. In June 2015, the house was seized becoming the property of the city of Mobile.
