Sports, cars and food are some of dad’s favorite things. At Family Celebration Day, he can enjoy all of them with the entire family. This free Father’s Day weekend event takes place Saturday, June 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Langan Municipal Park (4901 Zeigler Blvd.).
“Our goal is to create an atmosphere that highlights the diversity of our community and the importance of family,” said Brandon Sanders, executive director of Wings of Life, who is helping to spearhead the event. “We emphasize fatherhood because it is vital for the health of our community and the lives of our young people.”
Family Celebration Day is all about family fun and recognizing the critical role that fathers play in local families and the community at large. The organizers of this weekend’s event believe that when families grow stronger, it benefits the entire community and its future.
“The event is twofold in that it promotes positive male role models and bringing the entire family together,” explained Commander Curtis Graves, director of the MPD Office of Strategic Initiatives and program administrator for The Fatherhood Initiative (MCHD).
Family Celebration Day will offer fun sports challenges and contests such as a 3-Point Contest, a Sack Race, and a Punt, Pass & Kick Challenge. Bring your family and come show off your skills. All winning participants will receive prizes and be entered to win the grand prize of $1,000. There will also be a Father & Son Classic Car Show and a “Real Men Cook” Grilling Competition.
Musical entertainment will be provided by Divine Purpose, Boy Gospel, Devon Massey, The Revivalist, and Kenneth B. Brandon. There will also be great food on site from local food trucks like Frank N Lola’s and Los Rollin Bros. To participate in the “Real Men Cook” Grilling Competition, you can sign up in advance by visiting mobilefamilydays.org.
Family Celebration Day is sponsored by Wings of Life, The Fatherhood Initiative, Revive Church, and Powerhouse Church Mobile. It is an Operation Echo Stop event supported by the City of Mobile.
