FATALITY (UPDATE_3)

Nov 14th, 2008

File Number: 08-11-1811U3

On Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at approximately 9:14 p.m. Mobile Police officers responded to a report of a felony assault in the area of 7500 Gunn Road. While servicing the complaint, officers learned that the suspect involved in the assault was occupying a Ford Mustang.

As officers cleared the location, they observed a red Ford Mustang bearing a similar description of the suspect vehicle involved in the previous assault complaint. Officers observed the Mustang in the area of Schillinger Road and Cottage Hill Road. The vehicle had been previously reported stolen earlier the same date.

As officers initiated their emergency lights and sirens, the driver of the vehicle refused to stop and a pursuit ensued in excess of 80 mph onto Grelot Road. Officers lost sight of the Mustang and relocated it near the intersection of Grelot Road and Cody Road after observing that the vehicle had been engaged in an accident where the driver lost control and left the roadway.

Officers observed that all four occupants of the Mustang were ejected from the vehicle.

Adult males Richard Hamilton (18), Jacob Cartee (19), and a 15-year-old male juvenile were transported via Life Flight to USAMC. A 17-year-old male juvenile was pronounced deceased on the scene. Richard Hamilton died as a result of his injuries on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at approximately 12:27 p.m.

It has been determined that Jacob Cartee was the driver of the vehicle and seatbelts were not being worn by any of the occupants. In addition, investigators have also determined that the suspects and vehicle involved in the pursuit were not involved in the assault case on Gunn Road.

On Friday, November 14, 2008 at approximately 1:30 p.m., Jacob Cartee was arrested at Three Notch Road and Highway 90 on two counts of Murder, one count of Assault First Degree, and one count of Receiving Stolen Property First Degree.

Mobile Police are simultaneously conducting a criminal, administrative, and traffic accident investigation.
