Homeowners: Expect Door-to-Door Visit from ADAI

May 23rd, 2016

UPDATE: As of Thursday, June 2, 4:00 PM, ADAI will no longer be accepting Mobile County requests for homeowner citrus plants to be a part of our survey. However, even if you are unable to submit a special request for your citrus to be surveyed, your house may still be located along the survey route. If so, citrus in your front yard will be examined. If no one is home, we will leave a door hanger with ADAI contact information.

The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries (ADAI) has notified Mobile Police of a door-to-door visit which the public should be made aware. ADAI will go door to door June 7 through June 10 to conduct a Citrus Survey with homeowners who have citrus plants growing in their backyards.

For public safety, Mobile Police advise homeowners to only answer if they see a white, marked ADAI truck. The surveyors will be wearing lime green and orange safety vests and will have credentials with photo ID.

"If we knock and no one answers, we will leave a door hanger," said Brittaney Allen, ADAI state survey coordinator. Allen explained that they will not go into a homeowner's backyard without permission. After knocking on the door with no answer, the surveyors will inspect trees in the front yard only.

The surveyors are searching for citrus greening, one of the most serious citrus plant diseases in the world. According to ADAI, it is vital to determine if citrus greening disease is present in Mobile. The disease does not pose a threat to humans or animals; however, it has devastated millions of acres of citrus crops throughout the United States and abroad.

For more information concerning the survey, the public should contact ADAI state survey coordinator Brittaney Allen at brittaney.allen@agi.alabama.gov.
