Some of Leinkauf Elementary School students recently celebrated choosing to be G.R.E.A.T. by avoiding gangs and not participating in violence. MPD Detective Lance Deleston taught the Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) program at the school with nearly 30 students participating in the training.
Lessons taught included communicating messages clearly, controlling anger, and respecting others. Through open discussions, role playing, and group work, the students learned the skills and behaviors to help them be a G.R.E.A.T. citizen. Upon completion of the program, students received certificates and enjoyed a pizza party.
The Mobile Police Department implemented the G.R.E.A.T. program in elementary schools five years ago. It is an evidence-based prevention program designed to be an immunization against delinquency, youth violence, and gang membership.
Leinkauf Elementary School is located at 1410 Monroe Street.
