Mobile Police Introduce New “Safe Encounters” Initiative

On June 16, 2015, Mobile Police Chief James Barber will introduce a new public safety initiative titled "Respect for Everyone" at the City Council meeting at 10:30 a.m. at Government Plaza. The program, which features a short video, outlines mutual respect guidelines for police officers, as well as citizens, to follow during interactions such as traffic stops and response to emergency and non-emergency calls.

In the video, Chief Barber explains citizens can expect police officers to follow the guidelines but also asks citizens to help keep encounters with police safe. "This program outlines how both police officers and citizens should behave to show mutual respect, keep the people involved in the interaction safe and keep the community safe," said Barber.

The "Respect for Everyone" program is part of the Department's Community Participation Approach to making Mobile the safest city in America with respect for everyone, through both law enforcement and crime prevention. "In light of the changing role of police in society, it is essential to be proactive in training our officers," said Barber. "This program lets the community take an active role in this training."

Chief Barber will be available after the regular City Council meeting for comments related to the new program.
