Mobile Police Investigate Traffic Fatality at I-65 and Cottage Hill Overpass

Dec 19th, 2014

On December 18, 2014, at approximately 8:50 p.m., Mobile Police responded to a crash involving four vehicles with one passenger ejected on Interstate 65 near the Cottage Hill Road overpass. Upon arrival, it was discovered two vehicles sustained rear-end damage and two other vehicles rolled over.

The preliminary investigation revealed a slow-moving 2008 Mitsubishi Gallant was experiencing a mechanical failure and was attempting to move to the shoulder of the interstate when a 2010 Ford Focus approached and rapidly decelerated. As the Focus was decelerating, it was struck from the rear by a 2002 Ford Escape. The driver of the Escape, in an attempt to take evasive action prior to striking the Focus, rolled over, striking the Gallant. During the rollover, the unrestrained front seat passenger was ejected. A 2001 Chevrolet Blazer attempted to take action to avoid hitting the ejected person and rolled their vehicle.

The ejected passenger, Meeya Kim of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, was transported to an area hospital where she died as a result of her injuries. There were no other injuries reported during the preliminary investigation.

Alcohol and drugs are not a factor in this crash.
