Several officers from the Mobile Police Department are presenting a summer camp this week that will teach boys how to become gentlemen. It’s called “Blue Ties for Guys - A Gentleman in the Making Camp.” The event is set for Thursday, July 25, at the Fuse Factory in Downtown Mobile.
In an effort to positively impact the lives of teen boys this summer, the Mobile Police Department Family Intervention Team created the one-day camp. Designed for 13-15-year-old boys, it teaches proper etiquette, social skills, decision making and goal setting.
“We created the Blue Ties for Guys camp to bring enlightenment to real-life skills that are needed in today’s society,” said MPD Family Intervention Team Specialist Jennifer King. “It is often said that good manners are important for success in life. Setting such standards of behavior encourages others to treat you with similar respect, thus creating a kinder world.”
Some of the camp’s interactive topics include Freeing the Mind, The Five Senses of Belonging: Your Affiliation Matters, Defining Healthy Relationships, Finding Etiquette the Gentleman Way, Follow Your Ambitions: Youth Entrepreneurship, and Everyone’s Got Talent! Serve Yours.
“Having police officers be a part of the camp creates an opportunity for them to help inspire participants, and at the same time, build a sense of trust and respect between law enforcement and youth,” King added. “We want the participants to leave confident and with an outlook full of grand possibilities for their life.”
At the end of the camp, the boys will tie their blue neckties, dress up in a suit and participate in the Mobile’s Future Gentlemen Styled-Out Photoshoot. One of the camp sponsors, Naman’s Department Store, will provide the attire and tailoring for the photoshoot.
The Mobile Police Department’s First Precinct, Youth Services Detail, and Homicide Detail are also sponsoring the event along with Palmer’s Airport Hyundai, Mullinax Ford of Mobile, Paulette’s House of Beauty, Rise Church and Scentsy with Jensi.
Other Mobile businesses providing in-kind contributions include TBB Barbershop, Eastern Shore Barber Shop, Jimmy John’s (Du Rhu Drive), and Chick-Fil-A (Dauphin Street).
Special thanks to the Fuse Factory and Mobile Law Enforcement Foundation for their support of the camp.
