MOTHER CHARGED WITH THE DEATH OF HER INFANT CHILD

May 12th, 2009

File Number: 08-11-0048

On November 1, 2008 at approximately 4:30 A.M. Mobile Police responded to a report of a deceased child (identified as one year old male, James Langley Jr.) at the University of South Alabama Children's and Women's Hospital.

Homicide Investigators responded to the scene and initially learned that the mother of the infant (identified as 31 year old Angela Garcia) discovered the infant unresponsive and not breathing after awaking at her residence.

An autopsy report revealed that the infant died as a result of a Methadone overdose. Numerous toxicology tests were also conducted over the course of this investigation which revealed that the infant had ingested Methadone on various occasions.

Upon further investigation by Homicide Detectives, it was further determined that the mother and sole care provider for the child exposed the infant to Methadone on more than one occasion.

On May 12, 2009 at approximately 4:20 P.M., Mobile Police arrested and charged Angela Garcia with Chemical Endangerment of Exposing a Child to an Environment in which Controlled Substances are Produced or Distributed. Garcia was subsequently transported to Mobile County Metro Jail.
