MPD ANNOUNCES FEBRUARY 2009 OFFICER OF THE MONTH

The Mobile Police Department would like to extend an open invitation to the media for the monthly Officer of the Month Luncheon to be held on March 10, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 3051 Pleasant Valley Rd.

Officer Matthew Peak, who is assigned to the Fifth Precinct, will be awarded the honor for his exceptional performance and dedication to the arrest of those manufacturing and distributing illegal drugs.

Officer Peak is responsible for the following arrests in February:

• An employee at Wal-Mart, located at 685 Schillinger Rd., alerted police than an individual in the store was purchasing items known to be used in the production of methamphetamine. Officer Peak was dispatched to the call and, instead of approaching the subject inside the store, he allowed the person to leave the premises before he made a traffic stop and found a male and female in possession of 16 grams of methamphetamine and $500 cash. They were both also wanted for outstanding warrants.

• A routine traffic stop made by Officer Peak in the Glen Acres community resulted in the recovery of a substantial amount of methamphetamine.

• Officer Peak responded to a call from a woman claiming her sister had burglarized her parents' home. The inconsistencies in the complainant's story sparked suspicion. Officer Peak shared his concern with a detective and they, together, visited the sister who was accused of the crime. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the complainant, a known methamphetamine user, concocted the story to divert the family away from her own actions. She had, in fact, stolen property from her parents on several occasions to support her drug habit.

In all, Officer Peak answered 74 calls for service, served as back-up on 45 calls, made six felony arrests and 19 misdemeanor arrests, and issued 31 traffic citations during the month of February.

Officer Peak is commended for not only his hard work and dedication but also his innate ability to thoroughly analyze a situation in order to insure the proper steps are taken and appropriate arrests are made.
