In an effort to provide Mobile citizens a hands-on perspective of police work, the Mobile Police Department is holding the first of two Citizens' Academies for 2009 beginning Feb. 26 and ending April 30. The free classes are held from 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. each Thursday evening for the 10-week duration.
In each Academy, police create a mock crime scene and participants use some of the tools of the trade to try and make sense of the scene. Classes are set up amidst a tactical operations scenario and participants are familiarized with some of the equipment and tools used for specialized operations.
The classes are taught by police officials with expertise in the given areas of instruction. All aspects of police work are covered including patrol functions, tactical operations narcotics and youth crimes, officer training, community policing, and crime scene investigation.
Participants also have the option, on a voluntary basis, to ride with a patrol officer and visit several law enforcement facilities, including Metro Jail and Communications. In addition, they are to handle firearms at the MPD Pistol Range.
The media is invited to attend the sessions. Please contact Dana Godwin at 280-1918 or 753-3080 to attend.
