The Mobile Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred last night (January 26, 2021) during a traffic stop. Around 7:44 p.m., the patrol officer pulled the driver of the vehicle over on Highway 90 at the on-ramp to I-10 eastbound for several traffic violations.
The passenger, identified as 37-year-old Edward Bittner, fled on foot and the officer gave chase. Bittner had felony warrants for robbery and multiple breaking and entering vehicles.
When the officer caught up to Bittner, he deployed his taser and tried to take him into custody. Bittner produced a knife. At this point, additional officer assistance was requested. An officer who had just recently concluded his shift heard the call and responded.
As Bittner attempted to make his way back to Highway 90, the assisting officer discharged his taser in an attempt to disarm him. This attempt also failed, and Bittner was able to maintain control of the knife. The assisting officer then fired two shots from his duty weapon when he believed that Bittner was about to charge him. Both shots struck Bittner.
Officers disarmed Bittner and rendered medical aid until the arrival of Mobile Fire-Rescue. Bittner was pronounced dead at the scene.
This officer-involved shooting will be presented to the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office. The involved officer is on administrative leave pending preliminary investigation.
