The Mobile Police Department's Mounted Unit and Motorcycle Detail will utilize the Mardi Gras season to educate agencies from across the country. The unique environment provided by the season's festivities serves as perfect training ground. Approximately 30 officers will join the MPD Motorcycle Detail Thursday, Feb. 19 from 8 — 11 a.m. at the Municipal Park softball fields for a unique training session revolving around crowd control and maneuvering their motorcycles through narrow, barricaded streets.

Additionally, more than 20 law enforcement officers from across the country will converge on Mobile Police Department's training facilities located at 1251 Virginia St. beginning Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 8:00 a.m. The attendees will receive instruction on crowd control and accepting related nuisances such as noise, lights, flags, etc.

Both groups will put their education to the test when they assist with parades beginning Thursday evening through Fat Tuesday.

The media is welcome to attend training sessions; however, they must coordinate through Dana Godwin, Public Relations Coordinator at 208-1918 or 753-3080. The Motorcycle Detail will train Feb. 19 only. The Mounted Unit will train Feb. 18, 19, 20, 21 and 23.
