“Last night an innocent 5-year-old child was shot while outside an apartment unit at Oak Ridge Apartments. It’s believed two subjects were shooting at another individual when the child became the unintended target. My investigators and officers responded to the apartment complex immediately to begin a thorough investigation that continues today.
Through their hard work, an arrest was made Wednesday night. Zion Sashington, 18, was arrested and transported to Metro Jail on charges of Assault and Discharging a Gun into an Occupied Building.
At this time, our investigation reveals 5 apartment units were also struck by gunfire, but there were no additional injuries.
Like you, I’m infuriated a child was hurt for no reason in an act of violence in our city. I’m relieved to know he suffered a minor injury, but know this could’ve ended much differently. The victim was treated and released from the hospital Wednesday night.
I assure you my department won’t stop until all subjects responsible are arrested and held accountable. This remains an active investigation.
