Police Investigate Felony Eluding Pursuit

On September 25, 2009 at approximately 12:31 PM Mobile Police officers initiated a traffic stop at Dauphin Street and Florida Street. As the officer approached the suspect vehicle, the driver of the vehicle, identified as 25 year old Carlis Lavell Howard began to flee from the officer down Dauphin Street.

Mobile Police initiated lights and sirens in an effort to stop Howard who failed to heed, continuing to lead the officers on the pursuit towards Mobile Street and Fillingim Street. Howard continued driving his vehicle North on Mobile Street in the wrong direction and struck another vehicle occupied by two adult females. Howard then exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. Howard then jumped into Three Mile Creek and swam across it continuing to elude officers. Howard was subsequently apprehended by officers underneath a residence located in the 600 block of Petit Avenue.

It was discovered that suspect Carlis Howard was in possession of a .22 Derringer handgun that was recovered from inside of the vehicle in which he fled from officers in. Howard was subsequently charged with Felony Attempting to Elude Law Enforcement Authorities, No Pistol Permit, Obstructing Justice, Reckless Endangerment, Felony Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Resisting Arrest, and issued several traffic citations. Howard was also was booked into Metro Jail on two active felony warrants for Possession of Marijuana First Degree and Receiving a Controlled Substance.
