Police Investigate Officer Involved Shooting at French Quarter Apartments (Update #1)

On September 18, 2009 at approximately 4:27 A.M., Mobile Police responded to a discharging firearms complaint at the French Quarter Apartment complex located at 557 Azalea Road. Upon arrival, officers confronted a male suspect identified as 25 year old Frank Demetrius Spencer on the premises of the complex.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that Spencer fired a shot at the confronting officer; Officer Walter Bradley and began to flee on foot through the complex. Officer Bradley pursued the suspect on foot throughout the complex and returned gunfire striking Spencer. Spencer was subsequently transported to the University of South Alabama Medical Center by Mobile Fire/ Rescue Personnel where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 10:10 A.M.

Detectives with the Mobile Police Department's Criminal Investigation and Internal Affairs Divisions responded to the scene to conduct an investigation of the incident.

After assessment of the incident and investigation by the District Attorney's Office and the Mobile Police Department's Criminal Investigation and Internal Affairs Division, this shooting incident was deemed justified and determined that Officer Walter Bradley acted in accordance with department policy.
