Police Ramp Up Enforcement Downtown After Shots Fired Complaint

Jul 19th, 2016

Mobile Police will ramp up enforcement of the open-container ordinance, noise ordinance, and curfew checks after shots were fired in the Downtown entertainment district over the weekend.

The incident happened Sunday, July 17, 2016 around 3:18 a.m. in the 200 block of Dauphin Street. Police responded to an altercation between several males in front of the Downtown Mobile Alliance. As they moved in the direction of the disturbance, three shots were fired into the air. The subjects ran from the area and the crowd dispersed. There were no injuries reported, no victims, and no suspect has been identified at this time.

Although it is unknown who fired the shots, police recovered two 9mm casing and a black holster from the scene.

To help keep the Downtown entertainment district safe, violators of the open-container ordinance will be subject to arrest. Only alcohol beverages in an approved plastic container with the logo of a downtown restaurant or club are allowed. Approved plastic containers are 16 ounces or smaller.

Police will strictly enforce the noise ordinance. To play music that can be heard at a distance of 25 feet or more away is prohibited.

Curfew checks will increase and lawful action will be taken on minors who violate the curfew ordinance. Minors may not be in the Downtown entertainment district from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. on any day, except New Year's Eve and during Mardi Gras.

Any unruly crowd will be asked to leave.
