Registration Open for MPD Citizens Academy

Applications are now being accepted for the 20th Citizens Academy Class. Enrollment is for those who want a hands-on perspective of police work. Classes are held Tuesdays beginning Sept. 6 through Nov. 8 from 6 to 9 p.m.

During the 10-week training period, participants will learn methods to fight crime and aid victims. Topics include crime scene security and investigations, traffic operations, tactical unit callouts, bomb squad, case investigation and crime prevention. Two Saturday classes, 8 a.m. to noon, include a tour of Metro Jail and the Communications Center and training at the Firearms Range.

The training program is free and the maximum class size is 35. Applicants who meet the requirements will be admitted on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Participants must be residents of the city or its police jurisdiction, at least 21 years old, have a valid driver license and no significant arrest history. A criminal background check is required.
