The Mobile Police Department Traffic Safety Unit conducted an Interstate Traffic Enforcement Operation in response to the number of serious wrecks occurring on the interstate highways within the city limits of Mobile. The operation was from July 20 to July 24, 2020, after the most recent traffic fatality on northbound I-65 between Moffett Road and Highway 45.
Understanding that speed and distracted driving are the leading causes of traffic accidents, identifying unsafe driving behaviors was top focus for the officers. There were 107 speeding tickets issued to motorists, and 18 were pulled over for driving at an excessive speed of over 90 mph. The officers also issued 48 citations for other moving violations.
Officers responded to 48 traffic accidents without injury and nine traffic accidents with injury. There were 13 reports for leaving the scene of an accident.
Five people were arrested on drug charges during three traffic stops where K-9 was called to search a vehicle.
This Interstate Traffic Enforcement Operation was not a revenue-based action. Officers took normal calls for service in their assigned areas while conducting the enforcement operation.
The Mobile Police Department Traffic Safety Unit will continue its normal daily efforts to reduce speeds through enforcement of municipal and state traffic laws.
