Water Main Burst at Government and Royal

Nov 17th, 2015

On November 17, 2015 at approximately 8 a.m., the water main at the intersection of Government Street and Royal Street burst. The water pressure caused the eastbound traffic lanes of Government Street to break apart. There was also water leaking into the Bankhead Tunnel from the water disruption. Mobile Area Water and Sewer, AL DOT, and Alabama Power dispatched crews to the scene to assess and correct the situation. There is no estimated time for the repairs, but it appears that a major pipe is broken and the asphalt will also have to be repaired.

The following roadways are closed to facilitate safety and direct traffic around the work crews:

1. Government Street eastbound from Conception Street to Water Street. (Barricades)
2. The Bankhead Tunnel is closed both eastbound and westbound. (Barricades)
3. Traffic cannot cross Government Street at Royal Street (Barricades)
4. Northbound Royal Street at Church Street is closed to through traffic. (Barricade)

Additionally, motorists should use caution traveling on Water Street as the water is flowing across the road and is several inches deep in some areas.
