On Monday, November 13, 2023, at approximately 5:37 a.m., Narcotics Units, accompanied by SWAT officers, executed a knock-and-announce search warrant on the 3400 block of Sheringham Drive. Upon entering the premises, officers were met by a 16-year-old male occupant who was armed with a laser-sighted handgun and was pointing it at them. The officer discharged his weapon, striking the occupant. The occupant was subsequently transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In accordance with standard procedures for all incidents involving officer use of force, two separate and independent investigations will be undertaken. The Mobile Police Department's Criminal Investigation Unit will handle the examination of the shooting incident, while the Office of Professional Responsibility will oversee an administrative review of the officers' actions. All materials related to the investigation will be submitted to the District Attorney's office for their review.
The officer involved in the incident will be placed on administrative leave.
