POLICE ARREST HATE CRIME SUSPECT

On Sunday, January 4, 2009 Mobile Police responded to a complaint of Anti-Semitism images that had been spray painted on the Tree of Life Synagogue located at 8715 Jeff Hamilton Road. There were also images discovered at the location by police making reference to the Neo- Nazi type groups "Combat 18" and "Waffen SS".

On this same date, police also received a report from City of Mobile Public Works Department workers referencing similar spray painting located at Cooper Riverside Park located at 5 South Water Street. The workers photographed the images anti-semantic graffiti and proceeded to remove it from various locations discovered throughout the premises. The photographs referenced images depicting threats against Jews and African- Americans.

Investigators with the Mobile Police Department's Assaults/ Sex Crimes Unit and Intelligence Unit immediately began investigating these cases.

Investigators developed evidence of a potential suspect identified as Thomas Hayward Lewis, DOB 7/7/1986 (22) as being involved in these incidents.

On January 22, 2009, investigators were able to make contact with Lewis at his residence located on South Jefferson Street. Lewis. A subsequent search of Lewis' residence revealed several images (handwritings and drawings) of Neo-Nazi symbols and written messages referencing threats against Jews and African Americans. These images and messages were a similar match to the images and messages discovered at The Tree of Life Synagogue and Cooper Riverside Park.

Investigators also discovered what is believed to be an explosive liquid and other items possibly related to explosive making materials.

Lewis was charged with two counts of Criminal Mischief Third Degree, Criminal Possession of Explosives, and Possession of a Controlled Substance and transported to Mobile County Metro Jail.

The investigation is continuing to determine the involvement of any other individuals that may have been involved with Lewis.
