POLICE INVESTIGATE OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING (UPDATE)

On July 2, 2009 at approximately 2:00 PM a Mobile Police Officer was conducting a routine traffic stop at Government Boulevard and McVay Dr. While investigating the driver of the vehicle and attempting confirm his identity, the driver of the stopped vehicle exited and began to run through the parking lot of the Raceway Gas Station. The officer ran after the suspect into a wooded area behind the store. The officer attempted to physically restrain the man, and after a short physical altercation, the officer attempted to taser the suspect. The taser was unsuccessful against the suspect. The suspect was then able to remove the taser from the officer and then attempted to taser the officer. The officer then shot the suspect. Mobile Fire Department was dispatched to treat the suspect, and the officer suffered only minor injuries. The suspect was transported to USA Medical Center. The Suspect in this case has been identified as twenty three year old Ricky Landell Lett Jr.

The Officer involved is Christopher Moye. Moye is part of the Mobile Police Department Traffic Safety Unit and was hired August 21, 2004. Moye is currently on administrative leave as prescribed by the departments General Orders pending the outcome of the administrative investigation.

The investigation will continue and more information will be released as it becomes available.
