Traffic Fatality of Woman in Wheelchair

On Friday, February, 3, 2017 at approximately 6:48 p.m. officers responded to the area of Azalea Road at the entrance to Cabana Apartments just south of Airport Blvd for a report of One Stuck.  Preliminary investigation showed as the victim Meredith Baxley, 37, was crossing Azalea Road in a motorized wheelchair she was struck by the driver of a Ford Focus.  Mobile Fire-Rescue responded and pronounced the victim deceased on the scene.

Officers located the driver of the Ford Focus, 41-year-old Melvin Martin, and noticed the smell of alcohol.  Officers also discovered a small bag of marijuana inside the vehicle.  Martin was arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence Combined with Substance and Second-Degree Possession of Marijuana. 

On Saturday, February 4, 2017, Martin charges were upgraded to Manslaughter.
